Running or run/walking a 5K (3.1 miles) is a great first fitness goal. (We've even got a plan to help you achieve it.) And ask any seasoned runner and they'll tell you that fall is the best time to run, owing mostly to the cooler (but not too cold, in most places) temperatures and much lower humidity.
In just eight weeks (some plans are even shorter) you can go from doing nothing to accomplishing a whole lot. Here is just a sample of 5K races that are still open for registration (as of August 31, 2014) and you can get ready for in plenty of time if you start soon:
LOS ANGELES: Christmas Run (Santa Monica and Venice, CA) - December 6, 2014
NEW YORK: NYCRUNS Riverside Park 5K - November 30, 2014
CHICAGO: Evanston Flying Turkey 5K - November, 27, 2014
SEATTLE: Mustache Dache - November 8, 2014
BOSTON: Boston River Run 5K - November 9, 2014
Please share other 5Ks (or other distances) you know of that are fun for first-time runners!
